These are only the cases that you know and easy to identify. However, more empty streets or blocks are in the cities, waiting for people to move in. Ghost City Ordos: the famous empty city in China is Ordos, which is located in the north part of China. Ordos is the second richest city in China, followed by Shanghai, even richer in term s of per capita than Beijing. The city is rich because of abundant natural resources. One ââ¬âsixth of Chinaââ¬Ës coal reserve, one ââ¬âthird of it is natural gap reserves. The GDP has increased at 25% per year, much higher than the national level. With such a huge amount of money, local government wants to attract more people to stay in Ordos. This is how the empty city comes from. The new city was designed to accommodate 300, 000 people, with a capacity of holding 1 million people. Currently, you can hardly see any people on the street, even though most of the properties have been sold out. Surprisingly, the city is still under construction. The local government still believes that they can fill in the new city soon. Unfortunately, the stories about empty cities have been repeated on and on in China. This has been interpreted as a sign of over investment and real estate bubble. In the case, the apartments have all been sold out, even though nobody moves in. ecause most people believe that property will grow definitely. For investment purpose, most of them prefer to buy one. This kind of behavior has contributed to the high vacancy rate in China, High Vacancy Rate: since official data are not reliable, the concrete number of vacancy rate is not available from official sources. The reason for this has been that government officials said that, they donââ¬â¢t know what vacancy rate means. Obviously, government is trying to avoid knowing the fact. Somehow, people have provided a rough estimate on the vacancy rate. They are using how many electric meters that have no readings for 6 months as an indicator of vacancy rate. With such a high vacancy rate, people are wondering how large the real estate bubble in China will be. James S. There are mainly two types of risk that will threaten the development of Chinaââ¬â¢s economy, namely, loose mortgage policy for individuals and corporate. Mortgage loans are relatively new to Chinese residence. Most people pay cash to buy property instead of real estate loans. However, it grows almost 50% per year. The proportion of mortgage loans in nominal GDP has increased by 5 % in just one year. When big fluctuation of property price happens, it is likely that majority of property ownersââ¬â¢ benefit will be affected from two perspectives. First of all, it will mean the shrink of the value of lifetime saving. As property is the largest investment of most families, the decline of price is also the shrink of their wealth. Secondly, households will become more conservative in investing in the future. People will spend less money on consumption and put more money into banks instead. On the other hand, individual and corporate mortgage loans will also pose a threat to the banking system. For individuals, mortgage loans are relatively new. Chinese used to pay cash for their properties. Nowadays, mortgage loans have enjoyed a 50% increase in just one year. When property price declines, the majority of loan owners will have difficulty in paying the mortgage. When it comes in a large scale, private banks can go bankrupt. Once, Hassan even defended Amir against the same boys who raped him by aiming his sling shot at them. All this made Amir feel like a coward and compared to Hassans bravery, he even felt jealous. One night he was tossing and turning and said to no one, I watched Hassan get raped. A part of me was hoping someone would wake up and hear so I wouldnt have to live with this lie anymore I was the monster That was the night I became an insomniac. (pg. 86) At that point even being around Hassan was a constant reminder of Amirs failures and that made him angry but feeling angry added even more guilt. In Amirs desperate attempt to get out from under feelings of crushing guilt, he planted his birthday present of a watch and some money under Hassans mattress and told Baba. I knocked on Babas door and told what I hoped would be the last in a long line of shameful lies. (pg. 104) But when Hassan replied yes to stealing, Amir flinched, like Id been slapped. My heart sank and I almost blurted out the truth. Then I understood: This was Hassans final sacrifice for me. (pg. 105) Amir said he loved Hassan in that moment, more than he ever loved anyone but he didnt tell the truth. He remained silent hoping that the stealing would get them fired and he could move on, forget, start with a clean slate be able to breathe again. (pg. 106) However, Baba forgave Hassan for stealing, to Amirs complete shock, but Ali insisted they leave anyway and that broke Babas heart. Amir does move on with his life but doesnt begin to forgive himself or let go of the load of guilt he carried until the story comes full circle with Amir getting the opportunity make things right by helping his brother Hassans son, his nephew. The TROLL is used to assess important literacy skills like language, reading and writing. The ECERS-R is used to assess the global quality of classrooms with regard to Space and Furnishings, Personal Care Routine, Language/Reasoning, Activities, Interaction, Program Structure Parents and Staff. The ELLCO toolkit is used to assess the quality of the literacy environments with the help of three tools that help determine the extent to which literacy development is supported, they are a Literacy Environment Checklist, a Classroom Observation and a Literacy Activities Rating Scale. However, only the Classroom Observation has been used in the research study conducted.(Cunningh am,2009) Results The ECERS-R yielded a mean score of 212 which indicates mediocre global quality. The ELLCO yielded a mean score of 44.4 which indicates basic literacy environment quality. The TROLL test was conducted on two sets of students students who were eligible for free meals (students at risk) and students who paid in full for their meals (students not at risk). The students at risk had a mean TROLL score of 71.53 (below the 50th percentile) and the students not at risk had a mean TROLL score of 8.44. The t-tests revealed a significant difference between the scores of students with and without risk factors. It has been concluded that influences from a low income background have a negative impact on literacy development and vice versa. (Cunningham, 2009) Conclusion Overall, the global quality of preschools in the Midwestern school district is considered to be mediocre as they provide only basic support for literacy development. These include implementation of activities and lessons, nature of reactions between adults and children and children and peers, quality of space and furnishings, abundance of learning materials and many more similar factors. Direct Assessment was used as an additional instrument used to gather information about students academic, language and literacy skills. The test used for the Direct Assessment was the Woodcock Johnson-III test of achievement. It consisted of two subtests namely Letter Word Identification and Applied Problems. As the names suggest, Letter Word Identification refers to the identification of letters and words and Applied Problems refers to basic math skills such as counting numbers and problem solving. The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test IIII and the Expressive Language sub-test of the oral and written language were used to measure language skills. A store and print concept instrument was used to measure literacy skills. (Mashburn, 2008) Results The variables measured in this research were gender, race, family income, process quality and corresponding children development. The results of the study showed that (1) Pre-school quality has a positive relationship with childrens development during the early years of schooling (2) High quality social environments and child development have a significant relationship (3) There is no association between higher quality physical resources and childrens competencies. (Mashburn, 2008) Conclusion It can be concluded from the two studies that global, structural and process qualities have a significant impact on the development of children. High quality preschool definitely lays the strong foundation for the later years of education. Students at risk who are put in such an environment benefit more from the nature of the program than students who are used to such high quality environments. Observation Evaluation To validate the points mentioned in the above papers and observe classes in a real life scenario I performed an ECERS-R observation evaluation. The evaluation was performed on 21 students of the Lincoln School and 10 students of the Early Learning Program and was focused on three scales, Language-Reasoning, Activities, and Interaction. Language Reasoning consists of four subscales: Books and pictures, Encouraging children to communicate, Using language to develop reasoning skills, and Informal Use of language. Lincoln School At the Lincoln School, all four subscales of Language Reasoning met the requirements. The classroom had a book corner and a story reading session; also the classes had pictures all over it at the right height for children to view effortlessly. The teacher(s) observed the communication levels of students in the class and encouraged shy, silent students to get over their shyness and start communicating. To facilitate the usage of language to develop reasoning the teacher(s) made use of games like Bingo that help reinforce their knowledge of numbers and vocabulary. The informal use of language was encouraged through casual conversations with the students. The school also conducted several interesting activities for the children such as dressing up as characters, playing with sand, creating 3D Art, familiarizing the students with numbers and weather, singing and dancing, playing with blocks, reading books or seeing pictures in books related to science and nature. These activities were al rated as per the ECERS-R. The only activities that did not seem structurally fulfilling were the Sand/Water and Nature/Science activities, because there was no outdoor area designated for water related activities and apart from books and pictures there were no Science/Nature related activities. The differences in the observations and rating could also be affected by the number of students in each sample and the corresponding number of teachers or assistants available to handle the classes. However both schools demonstrated good structural and process quality. The schools got off to a good start on providing global quality in their classes. However there is always scope for improvement. It was observed that the Early Learning Program provided a learning environment that was more active and involved more interaction. As a result the students demonstrated more creativity, willingness to try new things and an active picture overall. Rene Descartes Meditations Critique The flow of this paper will primarily be a series of inquiries on Rene Descartes methodic doubt as a philosophical method which has become the foundation of his metaphysics. In other words, this paper will point out several inconsistencies in Rene Descartes deductive process starting from its roots up to the conclusions he arrived at. In the Rene Descartes Meditations of First Philosophy, he expounded the epistemological problems surrounding the scholastic tradition. He furthers his argument that human knowledge is relying too much on traditional doctrines, which he said is based on unproven presuppositions. This gave way to the birth of a dilemma between what is certain knowledge and what is unwarranted belief. This mind set of Descartes led him to develop a method by which he can deduce what is true from a single fundamental principle This is Rene Descartes Universal Methodic Doubt. He started by stating that in order for us to seek for truth, it was necessary, at least once in the course of our lives, to doubt, as far as possible, of all things. He further argued that we cannot really acquire certainty on what is real when in fact we experience the same stimulations whether we are asleep and dreaming, or awake. The next subject of Descartes universal methodic doubt is mathematical demonstrations. He argued that there was no guarantee about the certainty of such mathematical demonstrations because of mans fallibility. He said that there was no way to be sure that we are not deceived by a God who made it appear to us that things exists but in truth are non-existent. He even went on to assume that God does not exist for the sake of argument, in which he replied that a lesser cause of his being will likewise mean that there will be a greater reason for us to believe that we could be continuously be deceived. Finally Descartes concluded that we cannot doubt our existence while we ourselves are, in fact, doubting. He stated that we cannot suppose that we are not while we doubt because we cannot possibly conceive that what thinks does not exist at the very moment when it thinks. This is how Descartes arrived at the single fundamental principle that he was seeking in order to deduce other forms of truth Cogito, ergo sum! At this point Rene Descartes encountered a problem in his line of thought. He cannot rely on the truth of his existence when it is based on the trustworthiness of his reasoning because his reasoning ability is also subject to the very method he created the universal methodic doubt. This is when he demonstrated the existence of an infinitely perfect being, who gave man faculties which are trustworthy and capable of discovering truth. His ontological argument about Gods existence is as follows. He stated that we have the idea of God as an infinitely perfect being in our mind. And it is necessary for an infinitely perfect being to exist; otherwise it is not an infinitely perfect being. He also tried to prove Gods existence by means of causality. He, once again, began with the premise that we have the idea of an infinitely perfect God, and since the idea represents an infinitely perfect being, we being finite, cannot have been able to produce such an idea using our limited faculties. This idea being beyond our limited capacities can only originate from a being that possess infinite perfection. After examining Descartes metaphysics from its roots up to its conclusions, this paper will pose various inquiries regarding the inconsistencies of Rene Descartes method. Rene Descartes began his inquiry by doubting all form of knowledge without exception, he even went further as to deem things with the slightest possibility of doubt as absolutely false. Using Descartes very own method, what makes the idea of an infinitely perfect God true? And if the idea of an infinitely perfect God doubtful how can he deduce, from this doubtful idea, the existence of God? Rene Descartes used the idea of the existence of God as an escape route to his philosophical dead end regarding the trustworthiness of his reasoning ability, but the idea of an infinitely perfect being is subject to his universal methodic doubt, thus he cannot prove the trustworthiness of his reasoning abilities, not to mention that the very same doubtful trustworthiness of his reasoning ability was used to prove the existence of God in the first place. In only goes to show that since the very idea of a God is doubtful, every other thing must remain doubtful. The trustworthiness of Rene Descartes reasoning ability was assumed as an effect of the existence of an infinitely perfect being; and this infinitely perfect beings perfection is made certain to him by means of his reasoning ability, before he was able to prove the validity of the trustworthiness of his reasoning ability. He assumed the trustworthiness of his reasoning ability in order to prove the existence of God in order to prove the trustworthiness of his reasoning ability, thus he commits a fallacy called begging the question also known as a circular argument. His line of thought was nullified because a doubtfully valid faculty can produce only a doubtfully valid argument, and a doubtfully valid argument can only lead to a doubtfully valid conclusion. This series of inconsistencies in Rene Descartes method goes to show that the very moment Rene Descartes decided to adopt a method of universal doubt to deduce a fundamental philosophical principle in which he will deduce other forms of truth, is the same moment that he created an unsurpassable wall that will render any method of acquiring truth impossible. His actual procedure in all the arguments he presented is that he presupposes the validity of his reasoning when in fact it is also subject to the methodic doubt that he devised hindering him from accepting the validity of his reasoning before he can prove the existence of an infinitely perfect God. The only possible end for his arguments is to accept a sort of universal scepticism, because no certitude can ever be attained in a system that doubts and ultimately deem the foundations of human reason as false. If the very nature of his mind is subject to doubt, not to mention deemed as absolutely false, then all ideas, judgements, a nd inferences can no longer be trusted. If Descartes mistrusts the simple judgments of 2+3=5 and A square has four sides, how can he trust his faculties in making the far more complicated arguments with which he tries to prove Gods existence and infinite perfection?
